Average asset of 102 re-elected MPs rises by 110% between 2014-2024: ADR

According to a report published by the Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR), the 102 MPs who were re-elected to the Lok Sabha between 2014 and 2024 recorded an average growth of over 100 per cent in their assets.

The top ten MPs who recorded the highest increase in their assets include Udayanraje Bhonsle, Poonamben Maadam, Hema Malini, Nishikant Dubey from the BJP; YSRCP’s PV Midhun Reddy; Shiromani Akali Dal’s Harsimrat Kaur Badal; Shatrughan Sinha of Trinamool Congress; and Supriya Sule of NCP (SP).

The average wealth increase of the 102 MPs who were re-elected between the Lok Sabha elections between 2014 and 2024 was ₹17.36 crore, which equates to an increase of nearly 110%, the report said.

According to the report, a 268% increase was recorded in the assets of Mr. Bhonsle, who was elected as an MP from Satara in Maharashtra from the Nationalist Congress Party in 2014 and 2019 and from the BJP in 2024.

It had assets worth ₹60 crore in 2014, which increased to ₹199 crore in 2019 and ₹223 crore in 2024; total increase of ₹162 crore.

While the assets of YSRCP’s PV Midhun Reddy from Rajampet constituency increased by ₹124.25 crore from ₹22.59 crore in 2014 to ₹146.85 crore in 2024, the assets of actor-turned-politician Hema Malini increased by more than ₹100 crore from ₹178 crore in 2014. The report stated that ₹ 278 crore was reached by 2024.

The assets of Gurgaon MP Rao Inderjit Singh of the BJP have increased by ₹96 crore, from ₹25 crore in 2014 to ₹121 crore in 2024.

Ms Maadam, the BJP MP from Jamnagar, Gujarat, has registered an increase of ₹ 130 crore in 2024 with assets worth ₹ 147 crore.

Shatrughan Sinha, who was a BJP MP in 2014 and switched to TMC, recorded an increase in assets of ₹ 78 crore from ₹ 131 crore in 2014 and jumped to ₹ 210 crore in 2024.

SAD MP Harsimrat Kaur Badal’s assets increased from ₹ 108 crore in 2014 to ₹ 217 crore in 2019 and decreased slightly to ₹ 198 crore in 2024, recording an overall increase of ₹ 90 crore.

Meanwhile, Godda MP Nishikant Dubey’s assets increased from ₹15 crore in 2014 to ₹74 crore in 2024, while Baramati MP Supriya Sule’s assets increased from ₹113 crore to ₹166 crore.

The average assets of the 102 MPs re-elected by various parties in 2014 were ₹ 15.76 crore, which rose to ₹ 24.21 crore in 2019 and rose to ₹ 33.13 crore in 2024.
