More than 50% of Brits now own a deep fryer, with the vast majority using this popular appliance to cook two to three meals a week.
It’s reached the point where many air fryer fans have all but abandoned their traditional ovens and instead opt for the compact machine for most of their cooking needs.
But some users have learned the hard way that an air fryer can’t be used for everything.
One Reddit user recently issued a clear warning, writing: “Don’t use regular microwave popcorn. Just don’t.”
Another added: “I don’t think it will heat up quickly enough. Better heat some oil in a pan with a lid, open the packet and add the popcorn kernels to the pan.”

According to Good Food, popcorn is an absolute ‘no do’ for air fryers as it can pose a serious fire risk.
The publication explained: “These popular movie theater snacks won’t cook well in an air fryer because most models won’t reach the temperature needed to pop the beans.
“Popcorn kernels can also become trapped inside the air fryer’s heating element, causing the device to short out and create a fire hazard.”
Instead, Good Food recommends making popcorn on the stove or in the microwave and suggests recipes for sweet or fudge popcorn. For those keen on air-fried movie snacks, homemade tortilla chips are recommended.
Ailsa Burt suggested: “Cut a few tortillas into eight slices, then toss with a little oil, salt and pepper and air fry until crispy. Add whatever toppings you like.”
The warning comes after firefighters advised against viral TikTok cleanup hacks involving air fryers.
They warned users not to add cleaning products to the device in an attempt to ‘cook away’ the oils and then open the device.
Cleaning and maintenance advice
Firefighters always recommend using appropriate cleaning products and carefully following the manufacturer’s instructions. Abrasive cleaners should be avoided and never use steel mesh or metal scrubbing pads on tempered glass as these can cause minor abrasions that will weaken the glass over time.
This is especially important because air fryers are internally pressurized during use.
After each cooking session, loose food particles, excess fat and oil should be removed and the appliance thoroughly cleaned before being used again.
Care should also be taken not to drop or apply pressure to any components during cleaning. Damage to internal parts such as wiring harnesses or heating elements can lead to overheating or malfunction.
