Chris and Sarra Hoy awarded freedom of the City of London | Chris Hoy

British Olympic cyclist Chris Hoy and his wife Sarra Hoy were honored for the freedom of the city of London.

The couple was known for his contribution to sports six times as the Olympic Gold Medal, as well as his philanthropist works that create awareness in cancer and newborn care.

Hoy said that London will always have a very special place in my heart ”and carrying the flag in the 2012 Olympic Games was an experience that will remain with me forever”.

In a statement published after the ceremony, “Every Olympics are special, but nothing can defeat a home games, and when the city will come together, it is something I will never forget to watch memories in front of this incredible support.

“It is a great honor to get the city’s freedom, thank you.”

The couple, who married in 2010, attended a joint ceremony at Mansion House, the official residence of the Mayor of Lord on Thursday.

The freedom of the city of London recognizes individuals more generally and for extraordinary achievements for significant contributions to London or public life.

The 49 -year -old Hoy was diagnosed with stage 4 prostate cancer in October 2024 and was told by doctors that they lived for two to four years.

Born in Edinburgh, a cyclist retired from competitive races in 2013 after winning 11 World Championships and 34 World Cup championships during his career. After winning three gold medals at the Summer Olympics in Beijing, he was knight in the 2008 New Year’s Honor List.

The couple was nominated for freedom by London Lord Mayor Alastair King and Caroline Haines, President of the EPPING FOST and the Commons Committee of London.

Lady Hoy, a lawyer from Edinburgh, is British Ambassador of Bliss, a charity for sick and premature babies. Callum, the son of the couple, was born in 2014 in 29 weeks weighing only 2LBS 2oz. Last year, he announced that he had diagnosed multiple sclerosis.

“Chris and I also feel very privileged because they have city freedom,” he said. “It was very important to watch the competition in London 2012 in front of a house crowd containing our family and friends. London will always remain a valuable place for both of us.”
