According to eyewitnesses, a local journalist stated that the explosion caused the walls of two rooms used by the madrasa to collapse, creating cracks in the roof and support columns.
On the other hand, the owner of the neighboring building also reported similar damage. According to local people, a person named Mufti Harun had rented the building for the last three years and was running the madrasa before handing it over to his brother-in-law Al Amin.
Neighborhood residents stated that after the explosion, the police seized chemicals, raw explosives and bomb-making materials in the madrasah.
Property owner Parveen Begum stated that she had no information about any illegal activity being carried out under the name of the madrasa and said, “When I went there on Friday, I saw that the area around the building was blown up.”
Police officials said one person died after a crude explosive was thrown from an overpass in Dhaka’s Mogbazar area in the early hours of Wednesday, causing panic in the busy area, local media reported.
The explosion took place on Wednesday evening, under the overpass in front of the Moghbazar Freedom Fighters Monument, which is usually the scene of intense public movements. According to eyewitnesses, the explosive thrown from the upper part of the overpass exploded on the road below, causing serious injury to the victim.
He was later identified by relatives as a man named Siam, who succumbed to his injuries shortly after the explosion. “We learned that someone threw a cocktail bomb from the overpass, and the bomb hit the victim’s head and exploded.
He blew his head off. “We are investigating who did this,” a police official said, adding that efforts were on to identify and track those involved in the attack. Bangladesh is facing increasing violence and a worsening law and order situation under the interim government led by Mohammed Younis.
