Bar Association Issues Notice Barring Police Officials’ Entry Inside Delhi’s Karkardooma Courts

New Delhi: Shahdara Bar Association issued a statement on Friday banning all police officers from entering the Karkardooma district courts complex and alleging “misconduct, arrogant attitude and rude behavior” of some police officers towards lawyers. The statement issued by bar association secretary Narveer Dabas said: “All members of Karkardooma Courts in Delhi have been informed that the bar association has received numerous complaints regarding misconduct, arrogant attitude and rude behavior of lawyers. There are some police officers serving in various police stations that fall under the jurisdiction of the court against members of our bar association.”

Such repeated misbehavior, disrespect and unprofessional behavior by police personnel raises serious concerns among member lawyers and is an affront to the dignity and decorum of the legal fraternity, he said.

The statement said that the board meeting of the association unanimously decided that “considering the conduct and behavior of the police officials, no police officer, including court nayab (court personnel) on duty at police stations falling under the jurisdiction of Karkardooma Courts, shall be allowed to enter the premises of the court complex.”

In a recent incident, Police Control Room (PCR) officials on duty in Mandawali police station area were reported to have misbehaved with a lawyer and mistreated him in front of his wife and children when the lawyer requested him to remove the PCR van parked in the middle of the road. Police personnel also allegedly stole the lawyer’s mobile phone.

“When other lawyers reached Mandawali police station to put pressure, a police team armed with lathis and dandas was dispatched. The lawyers were treated disrespectfully and threatened by police personnel and no forensic science (MLC) case was filed despite the injured lawyer waiting for hours in the incident,” the statement said.

It was stated that the decision was taken in protest against such conduct and conduct of the police authorities and in view of the collective anger felt by the members of the bar against the constant and unwarranted abuses of men in uniform and to protect the respect, dignity and independence of the legal profession.

He asked the lawyers to cooperate and maintain unity, dignity and discipline during the protest.
