An Australian adult comedy about the antics of a “naughty” eight-year-old boy, based on a popular animated web series, has been acquired by the BBC.

Deano is based on a short-form animated comedy called Childish Deano.

According to the BBC, the web series has reached a global audience and garnered millions of views since its debut on social media in 2022.

The new eight-episode series, created and written by Dean Thomas and David Ferrier, tells the story of the main character struggling to survive in a “tough neighbourhood”.

Deano is said to have a “heart of gold” and embrace everyone equally, and is oblivious to the fact that “the chips are stacked against him” due to his past.

The series will follow the antics of Deano and his shy best friend Kit, from the “rich side of town.”

According to Screen Australia, the series is inspired by a real-life childhood, with creator Thomas voicing the eight-year-old protagonist in the web series.

Deano will be available to watch on BBC One and BBC iPlayer, and will also be available to stream on Disney+.

The series will be shot in Brisbane, Australia, and the creator of the popular children’s TV show Bluey and Australian animator and director Joe Brumm will serve as script editors.

The film will be co-produced by Australian animation studio Hooligan Animation, as well as BBC Studios and 20th Television Animation.

“I can’t wait for BBC viewers to meet Deano,” said Sue Deeks, the BBC’s head of scripted pre-buys.

“He is such a mischievous, engaging and irrepressible character, and the show is filled with irreverent humour, warmth and optimism – what a delight we have on our hands.”
