Sarwat Hussain Digital Media centre opened at Osmania University’s Journalism department

Osmania University Department of Journalism and Mass Communication has marked an important era in its history with the opening of Sarwat Hussain Center for Digital Media.

The center was inaugurated by Kumar Molugaram, Vice-Chancellor of the University’s Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences. The state-of-the-art Digital Media Center is installed with state-of-the-art equipment for digital content creation, including two high-end professional cameras and a customized Apple Studio computer system.

The equipment worth around Rs 20 lakh was donated by Vidya Bhandarker in memory of her late husband Sarwat Hussain, an alumnus of the department. Sarwat Hussain completed Bachelor of Communication and Journalism (BCJ) and Master of Communication and Journalism (MCJ) from OU between 1987-89.

He started his professional career at ICRISAT and worked for 16 years before joining the World Bank in 1992. He rose steadily through the organization over the next 25 years, eventually retiring in 2017 from the World Bank’s headquarters in Washington, D.C., as head of Global Agricultural Practices Communications.

Recalling her husband’s journey, Mrs. Bhandarker noted that access to quality education enabled him to develop professionally at ICRISAT, and his BCJ and MCJ degrees from Osmania University provided him with the foundation to join the World Bank and fuel his meteoric rise over the next twenty-five years.

“The giving spirit of alumni in the US is something we both deeply appreciate. We felt this was something we should do for Osmania University as well,” he said, urging OU alumni to reconnect with their departments and contribute to their growth.

Satish Thalladi, Head of the Department of Journalism, said the Center represents the Ministry’s commitment to evolve with the times and embrace digital storytelling.

Faculty and students lauded this initiative as a timely and meaningful contribution that strengthens Osmania University’s journalism education while honoring the enduring legacy of distinguished alumni.
