AUDIENCE MEMBER: My question is for my children watching at home today and the children in the audience.
How should they look at stocks when every day in the media they see companies going public that have never made a penny in their lives?
WARREN BUFFET: You don’t actually have to worry about what’s going on with IPOs or people making money.
People win the lottery every day, but there’s no reason it should affect you. You shouldn’t be jealous about this.
I mean, you know, if they want to do things that aren’t mathematically sound and occasionally one of them gets lucky and they put a person on TV and put aside a million for the government that contributes to the earnings, you know, don’t go there, there’s nothing to worry about.
Just – you just have to figure out what makes sense. And you don’t — and you look at buying — when you buy a stock, you put yourself in the mental frame that you’re buying a company, and if you don’t look at a quote on it for five years, that’s OK…
Let the rest of the world go its own way. You don’t want to get into a stupid game just because it exists…
As Charlie said, many problems stem from jealousy. You don’t want to be jealous of someone who won the lottery or bought into a rising IPO.
You have to figure out what makes sense and follow your own route.
