United States President Donald Trump took aim at New York City mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani, issuing a veiled warning that federal funding for NYC would be limited if Mamdani is elected. In a post on Truth Social, Trump called Mamdani a “Communist” and threatened that the city could see a “total disaster” if he wins.
This comes as New York City prepares to elect its next mayor on Nov. 4, as the closely watched race approaches its final stretch.
In his post on Truth Social, the US President said: “If Communist Candidate Zohran Mamdani wins the New York City Mayoral Election, I am unlikely to contribute Federal Funds beyond the minimum required to my beloved first home, because as a Communist, the once-great City has ZERO chance of success, or even survival! Things could get worse with a Communist at the helm, and as President, I do not want to send good money after the bad.”

“It is my obligation to govern the nation and it is my strong belief that if Mamdani wins, New York City will be a Complete and Total Economic and Social Disaster. Her principles have been tested for over a thousand years and they have never once succeeded.”
Who is Zohran Mamdani?
Zohran Mamdani is 34 years old and was born in Uganda. She grew up in New York and is a democratic socialist who is currently a member of the New York State Assembly and represents the Democratic Party in the mayoral race.
Trump’s Support for Cuomo
President Trump, who once had a strained relationship with former Gov. Andrew Cuomo, urged New Yorkers to support him instead.
“I would rather see a Democrat WIN with a Record of Success than a Communist with no experience and a record of COMPLETE FAILURE,” Trump wrote. “As a councilman he was a nobody, he was at the bottom of the class, and potentially again as Mayor of the World’s Greatest City, he has NO chance of returning the city to its former glory! We must also remember – a vote for Curtis Sliwa (who looks much better without a beret!) is a vote for Mamdani. Whether or not you personally like Andrew Cuomo, you really have no choice. You have to vote for him and hope he does a great job. He can do it, not Mamdani!”
Trump also pointed out his attitude in an interview with CBS’s 60 Minutes program and said, “As president, it will be difficult for me to give a lot of money to New York. Because if a communist runs New York, all you will do is waste the money you send there.”
He added, “So I don’t know that he won, and I’m not a fan of Cuomo one way or another, but if it’s going to be between a bad Democrat and a communist, I’m always going to pick the bad Democrat, to be honest with you.”
Following Trump’s interview, Zohran Mamdani responded with a sarcastic message targeting Cuomo on social media platform X (formerly Twitter).
“Congratulations @AndrewCuomo. I know how hard you worked for this,” Mamdani wrote, sharing a red graphic that read “TRUMP supports CUOMO” with photos of both leaders.
