Woman left bleeding in street after alleged racist attack in Canberra

A woman was left ‘covered in blood’ and taken to hospital after an alleged racist attack in Australia’s capital.
A 27-year-old Chinese woman was walking with a friend on Macdermoot Place in Belconnen, Canberra, when she was allegedly punched repeatedly in the head at around 5.45pm on Thursday.
According to police, the alleged attacker pulled out a knife and made threats before fleeing the scene in a dark gray Falcon sedan.

The woman named KK Zhang said: 7NEWS.com.au He said the incident left him “horrified.”
“I always thought Canberra was safe, there wasn’t a lot of violence, until I experienced it myself,” he said.
He claimed that the conflict started after a teenager racially abused him.
They allegedly hurled insults to imitate speaking Chinese, prompting Ms Zhang to confront the child and record the interaction.
Ms. Zhang claimed that the suspect approached her from behind and grabbed her recording phone, which triggered a physical altercation.
“She was punching me and I think her nails scratched me, I ended up with a 5mm cut on my face and bruises on my arms,” she told 7NEWS.com.au.
“My left ear was bleeding, including the piercing, and my nose was also bleeding.”


Police said the alleged attacker was not known to the victim or his friend.
According to the police statement, the injured person was taken to hospital with “non-life-threatening” conditions.
