Bessent responds to Trump’s post about Mueller’s death

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said Sunday that people should show more empathy for President Trump after Trump said he was “pleased” that former FBI Director Robert Mueller died.
“Given what’s been done to President Trump and his family, I think it’s impossible for either of us to understand what he’s going through,” Bessent said Sunday on NBC’s “Meet the Press.”
Mueller led the 2016 election interference investigation into Trump, resulting in a 448-page report that found Trump did not conspire with or cooperate with the Russian government to influence the U.S. general election.
He also did not recommend prosecuting Trump. But the president remained in contempt for a 2022 raid on his Mar-a-Lago estate as part of former lawyer Jack Smith’s investigation into Trump’s mishandling of classified documents.
“I was in the green room in Davos with the president, and a video was playing of what may have been an illegal raid on his home at Mar-a-Lago. They’re going through his wife’s closet,” Bessent told moderator Kristen Welker on Sunday.
“And I watched the look in his eyes, and I think none of us can understand what was being done to the president and his family,” the Treasury Secretary added.
Trump is now seeking an unprecedented $230 million settlement from the Justice Department over multiple federal investigations into his conduct.
“You know, I filed a lawsuit and I’m winning. There’s only one problem. I’m the one who has to solve it,” the president said of the legal battle last December.
“In other words, I’m filing a lawsuit, and I’m the one who has to figure it out,” he added.
The proposed solution was criticized by legal experts who said the multimillion-dollar request was unusual and could be considered unethical.
