Best advice for supermarket shoppers parking their cars as police chie | UK | News

A police sergeant has called for changes to make supermarket car parks safer. Sergeant Owen Messenger, who works with George’s Car Media on TikTok, explained that the technique he suggested was not only “much easier” but also made the car park much safer.

In a Tesco car park, Sergeant Messenger explained: “You have to weigh up the convenience of loading your shopping into the boot with the safer and easier time of actually driving your car.” He said drivers should consider parking upside down in supermarket car parks rather than ‘poking their nose’ into it.

“When you try to get out and your nose goes in and you back into traffic, it becomes very difficult to see vehicles and people,” he said in the video presentation.

He emphasized that once back in an area, you can see “everything that’s going on around us” as you go out and “we have a much less chance of running someone over.”

Sergeant Messenger, who is based in Devon and Cornwall, stressed that if it had been in reverse a small child would “probably be out of our view” as it could be below window level. CornwallLive reports.

The guide divided opinion among the drivers; One TikTok user agreed that “parking backwards is a lot easier than getting into a tight space,” adding that you can do your shopping “without a problem.”

Another added: “Many companies require you to park upside down in staff car parks such as warehouses as this greatly reduces the chances of causing an accident when leaving.”

However, one person disagreed completely and wrote: “Normally I think your videos are pretty good and informative, but you haven’t really thought this through. Most people need access to boot since most people are making a big purchase.”

A third person admitted: “I think a lot of people can’t actually step back and they don’t feel safe doing so, so they move into their own space.”
