Big talks, zero impact: Pakistan exposed at Board of Peace meeting; Sharif caught sugar-coating Trump | World News

US President Donald Trump chaired the first meeting of the Gaza Peace Board on Thursday, and all member states, including Pakistan, as well as observer countries, attended the meeting. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Deputy Prime Minister Ishak Dar attended the meeting on behalf of Pakistan. It is noteworthy that the Prime Minister of Pakistan led a large delegation to the USA in his Peace Board meeting uniform.

Just a day before the meeting, Pakistani Defense Minister Khawaja Asif made an important speech when asked about Islamabad’s contribution to the BoP. “I don’t see a problem with that. It all depends on what kind of terms of reference will be drafted for the peacekeeping force,” he said.

Asif said Pakistan has supported the Palestinian cause in numerous international forums. “So this is something worth trying. This is a good opportunity. Let’s hope it will bring us closer to a two-state solution in the Middle East,” he said, rejecting the assumption that Pakistan, like other Muslim countries, would recognize Israel.

But when the Peace Board results were announced, Pakistan was nowhere to be seen. In particular, the Peace Board pledged $17 billion for the reconstruction of the Gaza Strip. While Trump gave $10 billion of this, nine other countries pledged $7 billion.

While Saudi Arabia confirmed that it would donate $1 billion to the package, other countries (Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan, UAE, Morocco, Bahrain, Qatar, Uzbekistan and Kuwait) together donated $6 billion. Pakistan did not make any monetary contribution.

Later, countries such as Indonesia, Morocco, Kazakhstan, Kosovo and Albania promised to send troops to the Gaza stabilization force. Egypt and Jordan have committed to providing police training for these efforts. But here again Pakistan was missing.

He apparently attended the summit just to beg, as a large number of world leaders, including those from Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and the UAE, attended the event. A few days ago, Pakistani Prime Minister Sharif admitted that it was Pakistan’s obligation to beg for credit/assistance.

On January 31, 2026, Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif openly admitted that both he and Chief of Army Staff Field Marshal Asim Munir felt embarrassed as they traveled abroad to seek financial assistance to stabilize the country’s deep economic crisis.

However, critics had predicted that although Pakistan accepted the Peace Board invitation just to please Donald Trump, it would not be able to contribute to the Palestinian cause as the country was already struggling with financial problems.

All Pakistan could do at the meeting was try to annoy Trump while making meaningless statements regarding the conflict with India in May 2025, complementing his remarks with syrupy praise. The sheriff did everything he could to make Trump smile and sugar-coated his statements. Even during the group photo session, Sharif was seen mostly standing back alone.

While Trump reiterated his claim to bring about a ceasefire between India and Pakistan through trade threats, Sharif meekly praised the US President for his so-called ceasefire efforts. “You have proven that you are truly a man of peace, Mr. President, and let me tell you, you are truly the savior of South Asia,” Sharif said. The Pakistani Prime Minister praised Trump’s ‘unique initiative’ and ‘dynamic leadership’, saying his ‘bold diplomacy has certainly brought calm to many serious international hotspots’.

Trump will have veto power over the “Peace Board” and will be able to continue his duties as president even after leaving office. Meanwhile, countries seeking permanent membership, rather than the standard two-year term, will have to pay $1 billion.
