Mr. Clinton told the Committee that it was up to members to decide whether Mr. Trump would answer questions about what he knew about Epstein; Democrats specifically demanded this.
The former president recalled a conversation he had with Mr. Trump during a charity golf tournament in New York in the early 2000s.
Mr Clinton said: “The President never said anything – this was 20-odd years ago – that would suggest to me that he was involved in anything inappropriate involving Epstein. “He just didn’t.
“He just said we were friends, then we had a falling out over land and real estate deals. That’s all.”
The former president said Mr. Trump punched several holes while on route and somehow knew that Mr. Clinton was flying on Epstein’s plane.
“And he said, ‘You know, we had some great times together over the years, but we fell out over a real estate deal.’ And he said, ‘I’m sorry it happened that way.’ That was it,” he told the committee.
Committee member James Walkinshaw asked: “Do you remember if President Trump was the first person to raise the issue of Jeffrey Epstein in a positive way?”
To which Mr. Clinton replied: “No, but I would be shocked if I did. I don’t do that, you know?”
Mr Walkinshaw asked: “Do you remember if President Trump went into detail about the wonderful times he had with Jeffrey Epstein?”
Mr. Clinton responded: “No. And I took no at the time; I didn’t put any sexuality into it.”
The questioner then asked: “To your recollection, did President Trump describe the nature of the end of their friendship as solely due to a real estate auction?”
Mr. Clinton responded: “That’s what he said… But I didn’t think much about it at the time, and you know, it took two minutes and then we went.”
The former president also told the committee that he ended his relationship with Epstein years before the latter was indicted in 2008 on charges of prostitution of an underage girl.
He said he remembers first meeting Epstein in 2002, when the Clintons flew on his private jet for humanitarian work. He said they parted ways a year later.
Mr Clinton told the Committee: “Nothing I saw while I was around him made me realize he was trafficking women.”
Epstein visited the White House multiple times during Clinton’s presidency and there are photographs of them shaking hands, but Mr. Clinton has said he does not remember those interactions.
Mrs. Clinton said she did not even remember meeting Epstein. But they faced hours of questioning under oath by lawmakers who were ostensibly seeking accountability for anyone who was aware of or turned a blind eye to Epstein’s abuse of underage girls.
