Bill Maher laughs at celebrities wearing pins for Renee Nicole Good

Comedian Bill Maher thinks the shooting death of a Minneapolis woman by a federal agent was “horrible” and shouldn’t have happened, but he laughed at celebrities wearing badges about it at the Golden Globe Awards on Sunday.

Various well-known celebrities, including actor Mark Ruffalo and comedian Wanda Sykes, wore pins reading “Be Good” in reference to Renee Good, while others used the televised platform to make political statements. Maher laughed when asked by USA Today about Hollywood stars pinning themselves on the red carpet and using the Golden Globes for activism.

“We’re here today just for show business,” he said. “You know, it was a terrible thing that happened and it shouldn’t have happened, it wouldn’t have had to happen if they hadn’t acted like such thugs. But I don’t need to put a pin on it.”

Later, while presenting the award for Best Performance in a Stand-Up Comedy on Television, Sykes told Maher: “You give us so much. But I’d like a little less. Just try less.”

Maher didn’t look amused as the camera turned towards him for reaction. The award went to Ricky Gervais, whom Sykes has mocked in the past for jokes about transgenderism.

Good was killed last week in Minneapolis during a shootout with ICE agents after federal authorities said he tried to run over one of the officers.

The circumstances leading to Good’s death sparked a storm of criticism of the Trump administration and condemnation of the actions of ICE agents. While federal officials said the agent acted in self-defense and called the incident an act of domestic terrorism, Democratic officials rejected the self-defense claim and said the killing was unjustified.

The agent who opened fire was dragged and injured by a fleeing driver in a separate incident last year, authorities said. Authorities said Good had stalked and harassed federal officers earlier that day. The video shows him interacting with the agent shortly before the fatal incident and his wife mocking him.

Good also worked as a Minneapolis-based immigration activist as a member of “ICE Watch,” federal sources told Fox News.

Homeland Security sources told Fox News that the group aims to monitor, monitor, intervene and challenge ongoing federal immigration enforcement operations. The group maintains a presence in many holy cities across the country.
