Bill Maher tells young men they should drink more to combat loneliness crisis

“Real Time” host Bill Maher suggested young men should drink more during a spirited conversation about rejection, friendships and relationships with the bestselling author of “Notes on Being a Man,” which raises the alarm about male loneliness.
On Friday, the late-night host praised author and NYU professor Scott Galloway for calling drinking a “lubricant” to socializing.
“Not excessively, but yeah, drinking a little bit — drinking a little too much sometimes as a teenager is probably better than sitting in that basement,” Maher said.
Noting that one in five men who turn 30 are still living with their parents, Galloway credited Big Tech’s role in isolating young men, especially from romantic relationships. He then urged them to take risks and endure rejection in the process.

“The only way to get to the incredible ‘yes’ answer is through lots of ‘no’ answers,” the professor added.
“If there’s one thing I can tell young men, it’s that the anxiety and depression you’ll eventually feel in your basement is far greater for you than the fear of anything outside that room,” Galloway warned. “Get out of the basement, turn off your phone.”
He then criticized the “worst thing” young people have ever faced.

“The worst thing that has happened to young people is the anti-alcohol movement,” he accused. “The risk to your liver at 25 is dwarfed by the risk of social isolation.”
The professor and Maher considered how men’s loneliness might contribute to the latest statistics sharpening the aforementioned gap between men and women.

According to the survey, 40 percent of women aged 15-44 said they would move abroad permanently if given the opportunity. Meanwhile, only 19 percent of their male counterparts said they wanted to leave the U.S. altogether; This marks what Gallup says is the widest gender gap on record.
“I thought it was because of Trump, but it turns out that’s what it is,” Maher said.
“That’s true,” Galloway replied. “Males don’t approach them. You basically have a lack of mating.”

Maher reflected on how the risks of rejection have changed since she was growing up.
“The number one thing guys fear is girls,” Maher said. “There’s just something about refusing to go near someone who’s, like you said, cold. And you have to get over that. And I feel like we’re further away from that than ever.”
Galloway suggested that, contrary to other reports, 80 percent of women still expect men to initiate romantic interactions.

“Yes, it is,” Maher replied. “As it should be.”

“One of the things we as men need to train or give our sons the skill to do is to withstand rejection and find a way to express romantic interest while also making that person feel safe,” the author stated.

Galloway insisted that rejection is completely acceptable in a platonic or romantic situation.
“What happened?” he asked. “You’ll both be fine. Take those shots.”
