Bill Maher and musician John Mellencamp discussed Monday how wealthy liberal celebrities are unaware of ordinary working Americans.
On the “Club Random” podcast, Maher said he finds Democrats “less worrisome” than Republicans but takes issue with their far-left excesses and sometimes insensitive messages. “But yeah, I think both sides need to be called out. And I live in Hollywood, this town doesn’t believe that. They don’t believe in both sides called out.”
Mellencamp recalled Maher’s recent statement rejecting the idea of using the Golden Globes as an opportunity to make political statements by wearing lapel pins to honor Renee Good, the Minneapolis resident who was shot and killed by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents.
Various well-known celebrities, including actor Mark Ruffalo and comedian Wanda Sykes, wore pins reading “Be Good” in reference to Renee Good, while others used the television platform to make political statements.

However, Maher laughed and dismissed the idea; so much so that it sparked celebrity outrage; As he was being presented with the award for Best Performance in a Stand-Up Comedy on Television, Sykes slapped him and said: “You give us so much. But I’d like a little less. Just try less.”
“It was hilarious,” Maher said, recalling his initial reaction that sparked widespread outrage.
“It was,” Mellencamp agreed. “Because outside of this community of people who live here, no one cares…”
“But that’s what I was saying,” Maher recalled. “For the Democrats, that is – for the people who don’t see it – the point was that you should release the celebrities. You think they’re helping, but they’re actually hurting because people don’t see celebrities in a way that they can relate to their lives, and they can’t see them at all.”

“The other funny thing is, you know, most people, you know… We don’t know anything. You know, we don’t know anything,” Mellencamp said. “We don’t know what’s really going on. You know, we don’t know, and it’s always been that way for as long as I can remember.”
