A high school senior in Florida was looking forward to graduation and starting college before he was seriously injured in a skiing accident in Colorado that left him with broken ribs and head and spinal cord injuries.
Zoey McVoy was in Vail, Colorado, home to a major ski resort, with a friend for spring break when she had a serious accident on the slopes on Monday. The Boca Raton Tribune said McVoy was visiting the ski resort as a guest of a friend.
His injuries included shattered ribs, a brain bleed, internal bleeding and a ruptured spleen, according to an online fundraiser. He also suffered serious facial injuries, including fractures to his face and forehead that required surgical repair with titanium plates, as well as a shattered eye socket, the crowdfunding site said.

“Instead of enjoying the final months of her senior year (prom, graduation, and college prep), Zoey now faces a long and difficult road to recovery,” he said.
His mother, Ann McVoy, wrote on Facebook that McVoy was recovering at Denver Health Hospital.
“We have a long road ahead of us. We are working hard to deal with this unique situation,” he wrote. “I will say that all surgeries have been completed and we have had no serious complications. He is currently recovering and recovering.”
In the update, the Saint Andrew School senior said ski patrol and nurses at the local hospital initially thought his injuries weren’t that serious.
“But they quickly realized that the situation was more serious and that I would need to be transferred by helicopter to another hospital,” McVoy said. “When I arrived, doctors immediately took me into surgery for my 5th degree ruptured spleen, which was life-threatening. Doctors also discovered that 8 of my ribs were severely broken, resulting in bruising and a hole in my lung, and that I had suffered a brain hemorrhage and concussion.”

He said doctors eventually inserted titanium plates into his ribs and reattached them. Meanwhile, doctors discovered that 3 different bones in his skull were broken and needed surgery.
He said all three surgeries went well.
“I really don’t know what my return to school, graduation, college decisions, and lifestyle will look like over the next few months,” she wrote.
In November, Saint Andrews selected McVoy for his work during the “Solutions in Medicine” course held over the summer.
“A special thank you to Zoey McVoy ’26, who shared how this course strengthened her passion for both medicine and law,” the private school’s Facebook post reads. “We are proud of our students and excited to see how this innovative program continues to grow.”
