Police launch domestic violence probe after three-year-old boy dies at Beenleigh Police Station following Gold Coast car crash

The mother of a three-year-old boy killed in an early morning car crash on the Gold Coast opted to go with him to a police station rather than hospital, police say as heartbreaking new details about the shocking crash and its aftermath have come to light.

Detective Acting Inspector Mark Mooney said in his update on Saturday afternoon that a witness to the car crash took the boy and his 22-year-old mother to Beenleigh Police Station on his mother’s instructions.

“He (the boy) was in a poor medical condition before arriving at the station,” Inspector Mooney said.

“As soon as he arrived, the police immediately started CPR. He had called Triple-0 before the mother arrived.”

The boy became unresponsive at the entrance of the station on Saturday morning and officers performed CPR, but he died there.

The child suffered head injuries in the crash, which occurred at around 5am on Burnside Rd in Ormeau, south of Brisbane.

There were four people in the vehicle: a mother, a 24-year-old man, a three-year-old boy and another one-year-old child.

Inspector Mooney said the man, believed to be the driver, left the scene after the crash, taking the one-year-old child with him.

He was later located at an address in Beenleigh at around 6.30am and arrested.

The 1-year-old child did not suffer any injuries.

A witness saw the vehicle, a white Mazda, leave the road and crash into woodland.

The witness stopped to help and then took the mother and her three-year-old child to the police station.

Inspector Mooney said the man and woman had previously been in a relationship but had separated at the time of the accident.

They are parents of two children.

The man has been charged with breaching a domestic violence order and will appear in court on Monday.

Superintendent Mooney said the circumstances of the crash and how it occurred were still being investigated, and both adults were assisting police with their investigations.

Police said there was no threat to the community.

While investigations continue, many crime scenes have been identified.

Beenleigh Police Station was initially declared a crime scene but was later reopened.
