Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari on Wednesday, March 25, 2026, claimed that the Bharatiya Janata Party will win 177 out of 294 seats in the West Bengal Assembly polls.

The BJP leader said that if people were allowed to vote, “BJP cannot win less than 177 seats”. This is the first time that a BJP leader in West Bengal has put out a figure on how many seats the BJP will win in the Assembly polls.

There are 294 seats in the parliament and the magic number to ensure a majority is 148 seats. While announcing the poll candidates, Prime Minister Mamata Banerjee had said that her party would win at least 226 seats. In the 2021 Assembly polls, the Trinamool Congress won 215 seats while the BJP was reduced to 77 seats.

The BJP leadership, especially Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, had raised the ‘200’ slogan. couple (More than 200)” in the 2021 polls. But in this election, the BJP leadership did not put any figure until Mr. Adhikari limited the party chances to 177. TMC won 215 seats with 48.59% vote share and BJP won 77 seats with 38% votes.

In West Bengal, where the Muslim voter population is more than 50%, there are around 80 to 90 seats in the Assembly and the BJP has little chance of winning these seats. Moreover, in the Presidency region of South Bengal, which includes Kolkata and neighboring areas, the BJP has never managed to make an impact.

Addressing a public meeting in North Bengal, Ms. Banerjee said that after the elections, BJP supporters should put up posters and say that they have nothing to do with the party.
