BNP Thanks India for Recognising Bangladesh Election Verdict

Dhaka: BNP on Friday thanked India and Prime Minister Narendra Modi for recognizing the verdict of Bangladesh general elections and hoped that relations between the two countries will be strengthened under the new government. Speaking to PTI videos, Nazrul Islam Khan, standing committee member of Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and chief coordinator of 2026 elections, said the party appreciated Modi’s recognition of the people’s decision.

“We thank Prime Minister Narendra Modi for congratulating our leader Tarique Rahman. It is a great thing for a democratic country to recognize the decision of the people and Mr. Narendra Modi has done that. We thank him,” he said.

“We thank him on behalf of our party and believe that under the leadership of our leader Mr. Tarık Rahman, the relations between these two countries and the people of these two countries will be strengthened.”

Earlier in the day, Modi extended his warm congratulations to Rahman for leading the BNP to a decisive victory in the Bangladesh parliamentary elections.

In a post on X, the Indian Prime Minister said that the result reflects the confidence of the people of Bangladesh in Rahman’s leadership.

Prime Minister Modi said, “India will continue to support a democratic, progressive and inclusive Bangladesh. I look forward to working with you to strengthen our multifaceted relations and advance our common development goals.” he wrote.

The change came after the BNP won a two-thirds majority in the 300-member Jatiya Sangsad in the February 12 elections. This is the first parliamentary election since the 2024 student uprising that toppled former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

Although the Bangladesh Election Commission (EC) is yet to make an official statement, unofficial tallies and estimates by local media showed that BNP and its allies won more than 210 seats and Jamaat-e-Islami emerged as the main opposition.

This marks a major political comeback for the BNP after years of opposition and follows Rahman’s return to Dhaka from exile in London. The 60-year-old son of late president Ziaur Rahman and former prime minister Khaleda Zia contested from two constituencies and won.
