IKEA recalls popular product worldwide over ‘metal fragments’ safety risk | UK | News
The international furniture retailer has pulled its popular IKEA-branded garlic press from circulation over concerns that small metal parts could break into food and be accidentally swallowed.
The recall affects certain batches of the IKEA 365+ VÄRDEFULL black garlic press after the company uncovered a manufacturing defect during an internal investigation.
According to IKEA, there is a risk that “small metal pieces” could become detached from the kitchen appliance during use and then swallowed with food, creating a potential safety hazard for customers.
The affected garlic presses were sold worldwide both in-store and online and carry product number 601.636.02. The kitchen appliance can also be recognized by the date stamps on the product. Date stamps include numbers 2411 through 2522 (see below to learn how to decode IKEA date stamps). The recalled presses can also be recognized by the IKEA logo mark on the upper handle.
Customers who own one of the recalled products are asked to immediately stop using the product and contact IKEA for a full refund, the retailer said, adding that customers will not need to provide an invoice or proof of purchase to request their money back.
A statement on the Swedish furniture retailer’s website urged customers who had loaned or gifted the product to spread the word. IKEA, known for its passion for Allen keys and ready-to-assemble furniture, apologized in a statement for the inconvenience caused by the recall.
In addition to the faulty garlic press, the Swedish furniture giant has made a series of recalls in recent months. Other recalled items include:
- Garlic Press: Stamped on the black plastic handle.
- Furniture/Other: A 4-digit number usually found on a sticker and is usually found on the bottom or back of the item.
IKEA date stamps are published in Year-Week format. For example: 2411 means 2024, week 11.
