Kuala Lumpur: An experiment has captured the imagination of drivers and policymakers in Semenyih, Malaysia. The 245-meter road was painted not with ordinary white stripes, but with photoluminescent paint that glows in the dark. It absorbs sunlight during the day, shines at night, and eliminates the need for electricity on rural roads where lighting is inadequate. The Ministry of Public Works (JKR) pilot project aimed to provide a cost-effective solution to Malaysia’s deadly night driving record.
Initial reactions were extremely positive. Drivers reported significantly improved visibility during heavy rain and fog, especially in areas without street lights. In a country where traffic accidents claim the lives of more than 6,000 people a year, social media was abuzz with praise for both its aesthetics and its life-saving potential.
But the shine quickly faded. As of November 2024, Deputy Minister of Public Works Ahmad Maslan confirmed that the government will not expand the project.

Ambitious Concept But High Price
Glow-in-the-dark trails aren’t exactly new. Trials in the Netherlands and Japan involved photoluminescent paint, often over short distances or on cycle paths. But Malaysia has embarked on a much more ambitious initiative: replacing conventional lighting in rural areas where access to electricity is limited.
Economic difficulties quickly emerged. According to official statements reported by Paul Tan’s Automotive News, the custom paint costs RM749 (about US$158) per square meter, which is almost 20 times higher than standard white thermoplastic signs that cost about RM40 per square meter.
Tropical Climate Has Harm
Cost wasn’t the only obstacle. Malaysia’s humid and rainy climate exposed the technical limitations of paint. Engineers from the Malaysian Institute of Road Safety Research (MIROS) raised concerns about durability, highlighting that photoluminescent coatings typically deteriorate within 12 to 18 months in tropical conditions, according to the International Journal of Pavement Research and Technology.
Even Labor Minister Alexander Nanta Linggi, who praised the road signs in October 2023, acknowledged in a statement published on Meta that implementation costs are “relatively high” and long-term durability remains uncertain.
Public Excitement Turns into Skepticism
The public’s excitement soon faded. Social media posts turned from celebration to criticism. Citizens questioned the government’s priorities, pointing out potholes, faded signs and poorly maintained roads.
“Ask your officers to drive in the rain or at night and you will see poor visibility, potholes, and bumpy roads. These are what cause accidents,” wrote one Meta user.
The backlash has highlighted broader concerns about Malaysia’s approach to infrastructure. Although innovation is valued, many citizens remain wary of situations where costly pilot programs overshadow urgent care needs.
Global Research Continues
Although Malaysia has abandoned glow-in-the-dark roads, research continues worldwide. Scientists at TU Delft in the Netherlands are developing a new generation of luminescent paints that offer better weather resistance and lower production costs.
Japan’s National Institute of Land and Infrastructure Management (NILIM) is testing similar applications in urban areas with high ambient light.
Despite these advances, widespread adoption remains rare. Even countries with the technical capacity and favorable conditions find photoluminescent roads economically challenging compared to LED street lights, which offer durability, consistent illumination and easier maintenance.
Lessons from Malaysia
Malaysia’s experiment now serves as a cautionary tale for governments exploring infrastructure innovations. Ambition alone is not enough. Financial, climatic and real-world maintenance factors should be carefully considered before large-scale rollout. Glowing roads may have promised a futuristic solution for safer driving, but in practice reality dimmed the glow long before the first night without electricity was over.
