Breckenridge teens accused of lying to police by saying they walked in on friend suffering from gunshot

BRECKENRIDGE, Texas (KTAB/KRBC) – Three Breckenridge teens are accused of lying to police by saying they went to their friend who was suffering from gunshot wounds.

Mark Campbell, Jr., Tylen Collins, and Oliziah Reyes were booked into the Stephens County Jail on Thursday on charges of Making False Report to a Peace Officer in the death of 19-year-old Zackery Smith, who was shot to death at an apartment in Breckenridge on October 19th.

Court documents say all three teens gave police a similar false narrative, stating that Campbell woke up the morning of Oct. 19 searching for her Airpods and then asked to go to Smith’s house to find him.

Their stories then say that all three of the arrested teens went to Smith’s apartment and found him on the couch suffering from gunshot wounds; The teens claimed they called 9-1-1 immediately after finding him, documents state.

The documents did not detail what exactly happened that night, but confirmed that investigators determined that story was false.

Smith’s parents told KTAB and KRBC that one of the teens was inside the apartment when Smith was shot.

They believe that Smith and this teenager were playing with the gun when it was fired and Smith was shot, and they also believe that this teenager did not call the police or try to get help, but instead went to his friends and got them to lie to him.

Although there is still an active investigation, no additional charges have been filed in connection with this crime.
