Martin Lewis’ charity says DWP is ‘more aggressive than banks’ in clawing back debt

A charitable organization established by Martin Lewis (DWP) is conducting more violent “aggressive and faster” debt collection applications than most banks.

Money and Mental Health (MMH) Policy Institute says that the DWP’s way of helping over the over -paid people is “hard ve and gives vulnerable plaintiffs at risk.

Excessive payments occur to someone when more payment is made by DWP, mostly due to a change in conditions or a mistake made by the department, more than they are entitled.

These excess payments may accumulate for months without the knowledge of the plaintiffs, while the DWP may begin to pay rapidly within weeks after detecting the problem.

Representatives may then directly reduce 15 percent of someone’s monthly universal loan payment to compensate for these excess payments.

MMH claims that it is equal to a deduction of about 60 £ about 60 per month for a single adult 25 years and older.

In the meantime, commercial lenders will have to pass through the courts to compensate for debts in a process that may take months.

Before the expansion of DWP’s debt rescue powers, researchers from the MMH argue that their powers should be referred to be more managed for low -income ones.

The bill of public authorities (fraud, error and rescue) currently passing through Parliament will give DWP to the DWP, including forcing banks to share the transactions of account holders and to make direct deductions from people who do not have benefits.

Philanthropy also argues that many people are not aware that they can call DWP to try to negotiate an affordable reimbursement plan.

This process can be made more compatible with the consumer laws added with creditors such as banks and energy companies required by the regulation to interact with money debtor people.

The charity, who conducted research on the subject, said: “The fall of money from my benefits made it difficult for me to meet the ends, and I cannot cook because I didn’t eat for a few days.

Philanthropy also said that guidance should be strengthened for all government departments, including those who have debt management standards, including people with mental health problems in vulnerable conditions.

MMH General Manager Helen UNDY said: “When people pay more than they are entitled to universal loans, they usually with their own mistakes and sometimes the first they know, the government is the time when the government takes sudden and brutal steps to clap these payments.

“Many people we work with are free to eat before the end of the month, they suddenly get £ 60 from what they left.

UNDY adds that the aid institution wants to see better standards in the entire state debt collection ”.

A DWP spokesman said: “While encouraging people to declare a change in conditions to avoid debt, we understand that debts have occurred and we will always support those who struggle with repayments to accept affordable plans.

Ik We have brought a new fair repayment rate that limits debt repayments in universal loan by 15%and allowed 1.2 million households to maintain more of their universal loans.

“Our new fraud bill will help us define more payments at the earliest stage, so that we can prevent people from falling into debt and do it in a fair and proportional way.”
