Everyone going on holiday has been warned about a new fee that will come into force from this week. The government will introduce new fees for passport applications on April 8, increasing the online application fee for adults to more than £100 for the first time.
This comes after the cost of applying for a passport also increased in 2025. This time the price increase was 8%, and a statement on the government website said the new charges would help the Home Office continue to move towards a system that covers its costs through those who use it. This will also help reduce dependence on funding from general taxation.

Under the new proposals, online applications for adults will increase from £94.50 to £102, while children’s applications will increase from £61.50 to £66.50. Postal applications will also increase, reaching £115.50 for adults and £80 for children.
The cost of one-day premium applications from within the UK will increase from £222 to £239.50, and standard online applications from abroad will rise to £116.50 for adults and £75.50 for children. Overseas paper applications will increase to £130 for adults and £89 for children.

Mike Harvey, general manager 1.Movement International, He says the increase is particularly significant for Britons applying from abroad, where fees are already high.
He said: “For expats, long-term travelers or those in the process of relocating, these additional costs can add up quickly, especially if a passport is needed for visas, work permits or international moves. Getting your application in before the deadline can help you avoid unnecessary extra expenses.”
The demand for passport applications is expected to increase with the approach of peak travel periods such as Easter and summer. Leaving it too late could mean not only paying more but also risking a delay at a critical time.
Mike added: “If you know your passport needs to be renewed, taking action now is the safest option, putting you ahead of both impending price increases and seasonal peaks.
“Although renewals usually take around three weeks when completed correctly, any errors can cause delays, so it’s important to check all documents carefully before submitting. Early applications are a simple step that can save both time and money.”
How long does it take to get a new passport?
According to the Home Office, most standard applications from the UK were completed within this three-week period.
However, if more information is needed or an interview is required, this period may be extended. A good rule of thumb to follow is to apply for passport renewal as long as possible before traveling.
If you are applying for the first time or applying for a child, it may take a little longer. The government is also urging people not to book travel until their new passport arrives, as the new passport number will be different from the previous one.
