Brits urged to ‘keep their cool’ during emergency alert drill

The British are required to “hold their cool” during a nationwide test of the emergency warning system on this Sunday.

At 15:00, mobile phones connected to 4G and 5G networks spread a distinctive siren sound and vibrate up to 10 seconds.

Users will receive a message confirming that the warning is a drill.

This is the second test of the system. The first was in 2023.

The government has used five times to warn the residents in Scotland and Northern Ireland for real warnings, including the storm in January.

About 3.5 million people in Wales and Southwest England received a warning during the last December during Storm Darragh.

Meanwhile, a 500 kg of World War II bomb in a Plymouth backyard triggered a warning to about 50,000 phones in February 2024.

Posts can be targeted for relatively small areas to detect people at risk.

In May 2024, approximately 15,000 phones were warned during the flood in Cumbria, and 10,000 people received a warning during the flood in Leicestershire in January 2025.

The system is designed for use in the most possible emergencies to influence England. Warnings will also be transferred on television, radio and locally by playing the doors.

Government officials also met with domestic violence associations and campaignists for discussions on helping those who need to disable the test.

Pat McFadden, Business and Pension Secretary, “I know that the British will remain cool when the phones in the UK make a siren -like noise. [on Sunday] At 15:00. It is important to remember that this is just a test, just like the fire drills of all of us in our schools and workplaces.

“We do the test to ensure that the system works well when we need it, and then we will work with mobile network operators to assess performance.

“The test takes only 10 seconds, but it helps us to keep the country safe for 365 days a year 24 hours a year.”
