BROADCAST BIAS: Broadcast networks hate reporting on crime committed by illegal immigrants

On Thursday, March 19, an 18-year-old college student at Loyola University in Chicago named Sheridan Gorman was allegedly shot and killed by an illegal alien from Venezuela. José Medina. The networks could barely touch the story or talk about the alleged attacker’s immigration status. CBS spent just two minutes, followed by ABC at 79 seconds and NBC at 23 seconds. A search on PBS or NPR found nothing.

PBS stations spent 90 minutes on a documentary titled “White Scare” about how Republicans used blatantly racist tactics to win elections, one of which they claimed drew attention to the violent crimes of illegal immigrants. A prime example was conservatives covering the murder of Kate Steinle in San Francisco in 2015.

Networks hate reporting on crimes committed by illegal immigrants. They insist this is atypical. They like to proclaim that illegal immigrants commit crimes at lower rates than native-born Americans; if you are prepared to overlook the crime of entering the country illegally or overstaying your visa. But this ignores the obvious logic of grieving families like Gorman’s; If the alleged illegal alien killer had not been allowed into the country, their loved one would still be alive.

GORMAN FAMILY CALLED JOHNSON AND PRITZKER AFTER THE KILLING OF A COLLEGE STUDENT IN CHICAGO

Gorman’s family released a statement about their loss and the politics of it: “Sheridan’s death cannot be reduced to a general ‘tragedy’ or explained by broad references to failures elsewhere.” said the family. “We are not interested in political debates or watching responsibility shift from one place to another. If there were failures – as Governor [J.B. Pritzker] He himself accepted this; then each needs to be identified, examined, and addressed directly.”

“Our daughter is not a policy debate. She is a life that has been taken and requires responsibility,” they added.

Networks may cover this story driven by empathy and not politics, but they’re over-defending Democrats and these stories sound like “pro-Trump” narratives, so they’re more afraid of upsetting their liberal friends than they are afraid of appearing insensitive to the victims. They don’t want anyone to think that mass deportation will deter violent crime.

In a sad note for the future of journalism, the editors of Loyola’s student newspaper humbly apologized for correctly identifying the alleged attacker as “Immigrant man” in the headline. They changed his name to simply “male” and then described him as a “Rogers Park resident” rather than an illegal immigrant. “This headline did not reflect the most important elements of the story and was removed minutes later to prevent further harm to affected community members,” they wrote. Contrary to the alleged “harm” done by the illegal immigrant.

Gorman is not alone. Stephanie Minter, 41, was stabbed to death Feb. 23 at a bus stop near Mount Vernon in George Washington, Northern Virginia. The alleged killer is Abdul Jalloh. He is an illegal alien with over 30 arrests. “Jalloh is currently being held in Fairfax County on murder charges in Minter’s death,” according to WJLA in Washington, D.C. We couldn’t find this story on ABC, CBS, NBC, PBS or NPR.

But when someone dies while obstructing immigration enforcement, they will pounce on immigration officials. The ICE agent’s shooting of Renee Good as she drove toward him became a national case for weeks, making hours of news. But Laken Riley, Rachel Morin and 12-year-old Jocelyn Nungaray were bypassed as MAGA talking points. The convicted murderers of Riley and Morin were illegal immigrants. The attackers accused in Nungaray’s murder are also alleged to be illegal.

Last year at the Media Research Center, we learned that ABC, CBS and NBC spent 143 minutes from April 1-23 defending the case of accused MS-13 gang member and “Maryland native” Kilmar Abrego-Garcia, whom Trump deported to a “notorious” prison in El Salvador. But the trial of the illegal alien attacker against Morin, a Maryland mother who was raped and murdered while jogging, lasted just 12 seconds on NBC and nothing on CBS or NBC. Networks spent 717 times more coverage on Abrego-Garcia.

Rachel Morin’s mother’s condemnation of Maryland Democratic Sen. Van Hollen in front of the White House press corps failed to spur coverage on the networks. But ABC’s Mary Bruce introduced the “remarkable footage” of Van Hollen’s visit to El Salvador with the “unjustly deported” Kilmar-Garcia.

Also in Maryland, an illegal immigrant named Hugo Hernandez-Mendez was charged with murdering 19-year-old Black woman DaCara Thompson last September, causing a news reset on the networks. The alleged perpetrator was arrested in April and charged with driving under the influence by the U.S. Park Police, but was released pending trial in that case.

The networks may cover Sheridan Gorman’s story, driven by empathy and not politics, but they’re being too defensive of Democrats and these stories feel like “pro-Trump” narratives…

Thompson’s mother said she was “very disappointed” to learn that her daughter’s alleged killer was released in April rather than being held in ICE custody. “If they had done what they had to do, we might not be here today.”

This underlines that the “nightly news” on these elitist networks is not an objective assessment, but a carefully manufactured narrative in which the “news” they prefer is helpful to the politicians they support. No one was trying to shame Maryland members of Congress or Maryland Democratic Governor Wes Moore for these murder victims.

In this midterm election year, journalists will try to keep immigration as a negative issue for Trump and Republicans. They imply that everything Trump touches will turn into disaster. They helpfully supported Democrats who claimed ICE could kill people while helping the TSA with security at American airports. The “news” that ICE is “lawless” and that illegal immigrants are all non-violent and “law-abiding” feels like it’s on its head.
