Joy Reid says Juneteenth is the real July 4th, not Independence Day

Far-left journalist Joy Reid said last week that the real day to celebrate American freedom is Juneteenth, not July 4, and said no one she knows who is black celebrates Independence Day.

While speaking with MS NOW analyst Alex Wagner on Reid’s eponymous YouTube show, Reid revealed that his White friends like to celebrate America’s Independence Day on July 4: “I can promise you, Black folks, we’re going to take that day off, we’re going to have a barbecue because we [are] closed, but no one I know is really excited about Black 4th of July.”

“That’s what Frederick Douglass said. It’s a celebration of slave owners freeing themselves from having to pay taxes to the crown for their slave empires,” he added. “And that’s the thing, so to be completely honest, whether you’ve read the 1619 Project or not, you have to understand that for Black people, especially African Americans, there’s a dichotomy that’s hard to reconcile if you think too much about the Fourth of July.”

He compared this to how Native peoples on the North American continent feel about Thanksgiving: “So they’re like, you know, it’s not nice for us, but you go ahead and celebrate your Thanksgiving. We don’t say thank you. OK?” he joked. “And then that’s how Black people feel about the Fourth of July.”

“Whereas for me, Juneteenth is the true form of the Fourth of July, because we weren’t really a democracy until we ended slavery,” Reid said. “And then we weren’t really a democracy until the people who lost the Civil War were finally forced to ratify and act on the 13th, 14th and 15th amendments, which they didn’t have to do until the ’60s.”

“By the way, pass! Pass!” Wagner agreed.

Reid noted that former President Abraham Lincoln was initially willing to tolerate slavery even if he didn’t like it, as long as it could keep the union together.

Reid went on to claim that he was an “extreme racist” and argued: “‘Let’s send them all back to Africa.’ Maybe we would say, ‘Tell God I thank you.’ I don’t know.”

Wagner agreed that Juneteenth was the answer to the difficult question of what patriotism should look like.

While Wagner expressed his rejection of Trump representing America, Reid argued that President Donald Trump accurately represents what America is and has always been.

“Donald Trump represents the majority of American history. He is our dessert,” Reid said.

Wagner backtracked, saying that while it represented America’s history, it did not represent America’s present.

“He’s part of the present,” Reid replied, comparing him to former President Barack Obama, who he said represents America striving to be better, while Trump is the “evil” exposed for the world to see.
