Authorities in Greece have launched an investigation after a Ukrainian-made seaplane was found off the coast of a popular holiday island. The Magura V3 was reportedly found by fishermen in a sea cave in Lefkada on Thursday, with its engine still running.

The drones are used for reconnaissance and strike missions, with a range of 500 miles and a top speed of about 50 miles per hour. According to local news, fishermen towed the ship to the port of Vasiliki and handed it over to the Greek coast guard. The investigation is being carried out by the Greek army as well as intelligence experts.

One theory being considered is that the ship was used for drug smuggling.

Lefkada mayor Xenophon Verginis told Ta Nea newspaper: “We don’t know exactly what it is about, but drug trafficking from the Albanian coast often takes place in this area.

“The authorities were immediately informed and investigations are ongoing.”

Reports suggest the drone was configured for a kamikaze-style attack, possibly against Russia’s so-called shadow fleet used to transport oil and gas to evade Western sanctions.

Ukraine regularly used maritime drones to strike Russian ships, including shadow fleet tankers, during the war.

Local reports say the drone discovered off Lefkada in the Ionian Sea was loaded with explosives.

Officials who spoke on condition of anonymity said: Reuters news agency It was equipped with three fuzes.

One source said it was packed with explosives weighing up to 650lb, according to some reports, but this has not been confirmed by the Greek military.

On Friday, bomb disposal experts were assigned to remove the batteries from the uncrewed ship.

The US President said the ceasefire would include a halt to all “kinetic activities” and an exchange of $1,000 from both countries.

Located south of Corfu, Lefkada is one of Greece’s most popular destinations on the Ionian Sea and has been called the ‘Caribbean of Greece’.
