Busy airport evacuated after ‘bomb threat’ | US | News

The New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office said that on Thursday, March 12, Wilmington Airport in North Carolina was evacuated due to a bomb threat and a bomb squad was on the scene. The airport said via a Facebook post that it was alerted to the threat shortly before 9 p.m.

In the statement made by the airport, it was stated that “the terminal was evacuated in order to be very careful and ensure the safety of everyone.”

“The New Hanover Parish Sheriff’s Office bomb squad is currently canvassing the area to assess the credibility of the threat. Safety remains our top priority.”

“The New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office Bomb Squad has completed its sweep and determined the terminal is safe for operations. We thank our partners for their quick response and thank everyone for their patience and cooperation. Operations can now resume,” the airport wrote in a separate post on social media.

The New Hanover Parish Sheriff’s Office also posted a social media statement regarding the evacuation on its Facebook page.

It read: “ILM International Evacuated. ILM International was evacuated due to a bomb threat phone call to the facility. The New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office bomb squad is responding and operations will continue once the facility is deemed safe.”

Authorities have not confirmed whether an explosive device was actually found at the site.

The incident at the airport added new ones to the worrying events in recent weeks.

Several serious bomb threats have been recorded, including one in which a man drove a vehicle reportedly filled with explosives into a synagogue in Michigan.

The driver, identified as 41-year-old Ayman Mohamad Ghazali, was shot by security personnel before he could carry out the planned destruction.
