Calm weather forecast for most of Australia over Easter weekend while Bom watches for possible cyclone | Australia weather

While many Australians are expecting mild temperatures and the chance of showers over the Easter weekend, meteorologists are predicting a hurricane will form in the Coral Sea from Saturday evening.

The Bureau of Meteorology is predicting a mix of fine days and showers for most capital cities over the coming days.

“No capital is expected to dry out completely. At the same time, no city is expected to dry out completely either,” senior meteorologist Jonathan How said. “It’s nice to have a period where the weather will be calmer before a possible hurricane next week.”

He said Sydney would see showers “from the start”, with maximums in the low to mid 20s and some rain most days except Monday.

Brisbane will be warmer, with temperatures reaching the 20s and a chance of rain over the first three days of the long weekend. It is also said to be “fairly windy” along the Queensland coast, with offshore wind warnings expected to be in place for parts of the coast throughout the weekend.

Mostly fair weather was forecast for Melbourne from Friday to Sunday, with showers expected on Monday. Hobart will see a similar pattern.

Canberra will be mostly dry with maximum temperatures ranging from 19 to 25C. Isolated showers, storms and temperatures in the 30s were expected for Darwin.

He said Adelaide would be fine and “pretty warm” until possible showers arrive on Monday. Temperatures may reach 29 degrees on Sunday. “If you leave chocolate in the sun, it will melt,” How warned.

Despite the mostly settled conditions, How reminded people to check the weather forecast before heading camping or to the beach.

He said catchments along Queensland’s tropical north-east coast were still under water, so any heavy rainfall could lead to isolated rises of rivers and streams.

The system had a good chance of developing into a hurricane while over the northern Coral Sea on Saturday evening, but would likely remain well off the Queensland coast for the coming days. “It’s a little too early to say whether it will cross the coast or not because of the variety of different scenarios,” he said.

If the hurricane had formed in Australian waters, its name would have been Owen. But since it is located near the border of Papua New Guinea and Fiji’s responsibilities, naming rights will depend on where it occurs.

According to the BoM, the 2025-26 La Niña, a climate cycle generally associated with wetter conditions, is now over. Neutral conditions were expected to prevail in the coming months; El Niño, a warmer, drier cycle, was expected to develop towards the end of winter.
