The death of a 44-year-old Indian man in Canada after a long wait for medical attention at an Edmonton hospital has sparked renewed concerns about emergency room delays and health care capacity.

Prashant Sreekumar, a father of three and an accountant, started experiencing intense chest pain at work on December 22. He was taken by a client to Gray Nuns General Hospital in southeast Edmonton, where he was booked into triage and directed to wait in the emergency room, according to a report by Global News.

Despite describing severe and worsening pain, Sreekumar reportedly waited more than eight hours before being admitted for full treatment. His family said that he had an electrocardiogram (ECG), but that it did not initially indicate a major problem. He was given a Tylenol tablet to ease his pain and was asked to stay in the waiting area even if his condition worsened.

Relatives stated that during the wait, his blood pressure rose to dangerously high levels and he repeatedly warned hospital staff that his symptoms were worsening. It was reported that nurses periodically checked his vital organs, but no other intervention was performed. In a video later shared on social media, Sreekumar’s wife claimed that his blood pressure rose to 210 but no additional treatment was given.

When Sreekumar was called to the treatment area a few hours later, he collapsed almost immediately. Medical personnel tried to resuscitate him but he was declared dead due to a suspected heart attack, his father Kumar Sreekumar said.

Sreekumar is survived by his wife and three children aged 3, 10 and 14. A family friend described him as a respected member of Edmonton’s Indian community and called the incident a preventable tragedy.

Covenant Health, which operates Gray Nuns Community Hospital, confirmed the death and said the case was being reviewed by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner. The organization expressed its condolences to the family but did not provide further details.

The incident received widespread reaction online, with many Edmonton residents noting the long wait times at the emergency room. Health experts have pointed to seasonal pressures, staff shortages and high patient volumes as contributing factors.
