Canada Prepares For Mass Visa Cancellations; Carney Govt Drafts Trump-Style Plan, Indians Face Major Risk | World News

Ottawa: Their dreams of moving to Canada may face a sudden obstacle. Mark Carney’s government appears to be taking a Donald Trump-like approach by planning a proposal that could allow temporary visas to be canceled en masse. This may affect a large number of Indian applicants.
Citing internal documents, CBS News reported that Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) and Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) are seeking the authority to revoke Temporary Resident Visas (TRVs) en masse if there is evidence of fraud or abuse.
According to CBS, the proposed changes would allow the immigration minister to cancel entire groups of visas in the event of fraud, war or public health crises.

At this time, each case needs to be handled individually. Carney’s government is taking this step at a time of rising refugee demands and increased scrutiny on Canada’s temporary visa system.
India, Bangladesh Highlighted
Authorities noted verification challenges and increasing fraudulent applications in some countries, including India and Bangladesh. An internal presentation reportedly outlined country-specific concerns.
Global News reported that more than 20,000 international students claimed refugee status last year, mostly from India and Nigeria.
Most Affected Indian Applicants
Asylum applications from Indian citizens have increased rapidly. In May 2023, the number of monthly applications was below 500. By July 2024, that number had risen to nearly 2,000, prompting federal agencies to tighten monitoring.
Canada claims the proposal is part of a broad reform effort to address delays and abuse in its visa system. Immigration lawyers and advocacy groups have criticized the plan, warning that it could lead to widespread deportations without due process.
