Canada Wins The Race: Why Indian Students Are Turning Away From The US In 2025 | World News

New Delhi: India’s students re -calibrate global education plans. Increased costs in the US, harsh visa rules and political uncertainties want an increasing number of families to look at the north. Canada, which has been seen as a pleasant alternative for a long time, emerges as a preferred place for Indian students.
The trend is reflected in the official figures. According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, at the end of 2024, Canada hosted 427,000 Indian students compared to 337,630 in the United States.
A 2025 survey by Appsboard shows that 94% of India’s candidates abroad listed Canada as the best election. Purchase, security and immigration -friendly policies are stated as decisive factors.
In institutions such as British Columbia University, international student records increased by 27%and reflected turbulence to the south of the border.
For example, Huron University in Ontario sees change as both opportunities and responsibility.
A ROLLER COASTER IN STUDENT MOBILITY
Huron University President and Vice President. Barry Craig calls the last five years “nothing turbulent”.
“We started with Covid who created too many obstacles to student mobility, almost a complete stop. As we emerged, the momentum returned, but then geopolitical turbulence and diplomatic voltages cause another decline in Canada.
Huron’s records reflect this volatility. The number of Indian students fell to a great extent after a diplomatic order of 2024, and in 2021, the “Duzines” was only in three last autumn. Momentum is now coming back.
“This autumn is already about three times more investigations and applications compared to the last two years. Our main recruitment season starts in September and doubles at least even though it does not endure three.”
Purchase advantage
Cost for many families is the decisive factor.
“One of my daughters made his undergraduate degree in Canada and the other in the United States. The education in Canada was about 25% of what we paid in the US. The cost for an international student is probably half of a comparable American institution.”
Canada universities avoid inflated administrative or out -of -class expenses and give priority to academicians.
“We do not cut the corners on academics, but we do not spend money on non -basic things of education. We keep the prices appropriate in this way while protecting first -class standards,” he explained.
Working Ways Beyond Graduation
Canada’s employability policies offer a strong incentive.
“Canada is already attractive because we offer work permit after three years of graduation. We go further in Huron. 100% of our students receive a paid internship while studying. As a result, 92% of them are employed within six months after graduation and most importantly in their choice.”
Students enter the labor force with practical experiences and connections with leading companies and avoid the uncertainty faced by many people abroad.
A safe, hospitable environment
Security and social climate also shape decisions. “As I grew up in Canada, I thought it was boring – there is no fresh air, clean water, war and very little violence. Now, thank God it is very nice to be boring.
Campus culture reflects this atmosphere of welcome. “We believe in free speech and discussion, but we believe in respectful debate. Canada is a very hospitable country for foreigners,” he said.
Attracting talent, establishing partnerships
Canada also attracts researchers. The University of Toronto has recently hired three senior researchers who have recently sought freedom from political restrictions from Ivy League institutions. Throughout Canada, university leaders are lobbying the government to take advantage of this opportunity.
The University of Huron establishes stronger ties with India through the Indian Advisory Committee, which includes business, diplomacy, policy and educational leaders. Among his members, Paul Abraham (Hinduja Foundation), Renu Basu (IHCL), Ajay Bisaria (Canada Old Indian High Commissioner) and Dr. There is Barry Craig.
“They will advise us to interact with India and give us the assurance that Huron is serious in opening real doors in their corporate, entrepreneurial and public service careers to Indian parents and students,” Barry said.
Canada said it was open to Indian students. “We are actively welcoming Indian students for work again. Our campus community has been enriched with their presence. Good for India, good for Canada and great for our universities, Barry said.
