Canada’s foreign minister Anita Anand set to visit India as countries rebuild ties: ‘We need…’

In the statement made by the Canadian government, it was stated that Canadian Minister of Foreign Affairs Anita Anand will pay a diplomatic visit to India, Singapore and China between October 12 and October 17 in order to improve bilateral relations and cooperation with these countries within the scope of Canada’s Indo-Pacific Strategy. During his visit to India, Anand will hold talks with External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar and Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal in New Delhi. Discussions will focus on developing a framework for strategic cooperation covering trade diversification, energy transition and security. In addition to Delhi, Anand will travel to Mumbai to connect with Canadian and Indian businesses that promote investment, job creation and economic opportunities in Canada and India, the statement said.
Anand will meet with Minister of Foreign Affairs Vivian Balakrishnan in Singapore to further strengthen cooperation with one of Canada’s most important partners in Southeast Asia. This meeting took place as Canada and Singapore celebrated the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations. According to the Canadian government, Anand will highlight the progress made by Canada and ASEAN member states towards a free trade agreement and underline the importance of efforts to conclude negotiations as soon as possible in 2026.
In China, Anand will meet with Foreign Minister Wang Yi, Director of China’s Central Foreign Affairs Commission Office, to continue discussions on bilateral relations as it marks 55 years since Canada and China established diplomatic ties. This meeting builds on the commitments of Prime Minister Mark Carney and Chinese Premier Li Qiang to regulate communication channels between the two countries. The Canadian government stated that ministers will discuss the Canada-China Strategic Partnership, the evolving bilateral and global context, as well as issues important to the Canadian economy.
Anand emphasized the importance of the trip in a statement: “For Canada to be strong at home, we need strong, stable partnerships abroad. I am building bridges and increasing cooperation with India, Singapore and China. In line with Canada’s Indo-Pacific Strategy, I will work to advance efforts to position Canada as a trusted, reliable partner of choice for Indo-Pacific countries and economies.”
