Canadian PM Carney says US and Israel’s strikes on Iran mark ‘failure of the international order’

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney on Tuesday lamented the “failure of the international order” that has led to continued U.S. and Israeli attacks on Iran.

“Canada stands with the Iranian people in their long and courageous struggle against the regime’s oppressive rule,” Carney added. “That’s why we support efforts to prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons and to prevent its regime from further threatening international peace and security. Because Canada is actively taking the world as it is, rather than passively waiting for a world we want.
“But we take this position with regret because the current conflict is another example of the failure of the international order.”
The United States and Israel began striking Iran on Saturday, killing Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and several other senior political and military leaders in the Middle Eastern country. According to the report, more than 780 Iranians were killed in the attacks as of 04:10 local time. The joint operations come after U.S. and Iranian negotiators, mediated by Oman, discussed blocking Iran’s nuclear program and ballistic missile development on Thursday.
In his speech on Tuesday, Carney noted that “despite decades of United Nations Security Council resolutions, the tireless work of the International Atomic Energy Agency, and a range of sanctions and diplomatic frameworks, Iran’s nuclear threat persists.”
The United States and Iran had previously reached an agreement to limit Iran’s nuclear program in exchange for sanctions relief through the 2015 Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action. However, President Trump removed the United States from this agreement during his first term.
Now that the conflict is ongoing, Carney has called for a “rapid reduction in hostilities” and a “commitment to a broader political solution.”
“Now the United States and Israel are acting without consulting the United Nations or consulting their allies, including Canada,” he added. “Diplomatic engagement is essential to prevent a broader and deeper conflict. Innocent civilians must be protected, and all parties must be committed to finding lasting agreements that will end both nuclear proliferation and terrorist extremism.”
