Can’t they afford an iron? Why A-listers are stepping out in creased clothing, according to Princess Diana’s favourite designer

While we tend to associate red carpets with pure glamour, A-listers have recently adopted a more relaxed approach and blasé attitude towards ironing.
Celebrities have attended premieres and other high-profile events in a look that would surely have raised eyebrows from some of our grandmothers.
Speaking to the Daily Mail, British fashion designer Amanda Wakeley OBE explained that the look was oddly free of error. He said: ‘After years of everything looking aggressively pressed and perfect, fashion has relaxed a bit.
‘Many of the old-fashioned rules have already been relaxed since Covid-19. People have become accustomed to being comfortable and more comfortable in their clothes, and this attitude is reflected in the way we dress now.
‘A few savvy celebs also choose fabrics designed to crease or hold texture, such as smart silks, technical blends or beautifully crinkled linens, so the look feels comfortable despite being entirely intentional. Moreover, this is a trend seen in many designer fashion shows, from Erdem to Calvin Klein.’
Read on to discover how some of the world’s biggest stars make fashion mistakes while attending big events.
Meghan Markle
Once upon a time, clean clothes were dominant in schools, but now stars give up ironing and prefer wrinkled clothes. Picture: The Duke and Duchess of Sussex at a World Health Organization roundtable in Jordan last month
The Duchess of Sussex is known for her flashy, high-fashion ensembles, but she opted for a simpler look when she traveled to Jordan with Prince Harry last month.
Meghan, 44, sported a range of neutral, casual and noticeably wrinkled looks for the semi-royal tour of Sussex, including this khaki suit.
When the mother of two children went to the Syrian refugee camp with Prince Harry, she preferred wide-legged, high-waisted trousers, a matching short-sleeved T-shirt, and a white shirt instead of a jacket.
Lacking a girth (Meghan is known to largely style her own hair, make-up and wardrobe) and likely not having her own 6ft ironing board like Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor prefers to keep on hand, the Duchess’ trousers looked understandably crumpled.
But Meghan had no time to worry about obvious wrinkles as she was proudly focused on her important work in Jordan.
Katie Holmes

Katie Holmes’ lingerie-inspired burnt orange ensemble looked incredible — if a steamer was ever needed.
She wore Aligne’s £85 satin top and matching lace-trimmed skirt, retailing for £129, when she attended a holiday dinner at Chateau Royale.
Katie, 47, looked dazzling while attending an event for clothing brand Aligne in New York last December, but it looks like the Dawson’s Creek star rushed out without checking the wrinkles.
But given that satin wrinkles easily, it’s also possible that the disheveled style choice wasn’t intentional.
Gwyneth Paltrow

She rarely puts a foot wrong when it comes to fashion, but Gwyneth Paltrow’s wrinkled trousers at the BAFTA Tea Party in January may have raised some eyebrows.
The wellness guru arrived at the event, held at the Four Seasons Hotel in Los Angeles, where she paired a sleek black jacket with trousers so wrinkled they were obviously intentional.
It’s just one of Paltrow’s recent looks that has set tongues wagging – and earlier this month, her deep V-neck dress made headlines.
The 53-year-old actor attended the Actor Awards in Los Angeles on the evening of March 2 for the first time in 26 years.
She turned heads in a deep black lace Givenchy dress paired with 1930s Belperron turquoise earrings.
For her look, the Iron Man star once again relied on her trusty go-to for a deep V-neck with a cinched waist and no sleeves.
It’s a standout look that Gwyneth has perfected over the years; From wearing a deep red velvet Tom Ford suit to the 1996 VMAs to accepting the Academy Award in 1999 in a voluminous V-neck pink Ralph Lauren dress.
Jessie Buckley
Irish actress Jessie Buckley wore a wrinkled dress to the premiere of her film Hamnet in New York last year.
Irish actress Jessie Buckley has been front and center this awards season thanks to her performance in Chloe Zhao’s Hamnet.
And while it did release some eye-catching stuff this year in December 2025, there was a look that looked less flashy and more like it needed a good old iron.
The 36-year-old actress debuted her satin shirt dress at the premiere of Hamnet at the Delphi Filmpalast on December 8, but unfortunately the outfit’s wrinkles were a major distraction.
Luckily, Buckley has stepped up her game lately, hitting the stage in dazzling costumes at events like BAFTA and the Golden Globes.
Geri Halliwell
Geri Halliwell’s dress had slight wrinkles at the Commonwealth Day Celebration Service held at Westminster Abbey earlier this month
Geri Halliwell is known for her newfound love of pristine living, but even she’s fallen victim to wearing wrinkled clothes lately.
The former Spice Girl stepped out of the car in a belted cream dress at the Commonwealth Day Celebration Service at Westminster Abbey earlier this month.
While the dress was undoubtedly perfect for the occasion, there were wrinkles in the skirt.
The singer, now 53, was known as Ginger Spice in her heyday due to her bright red hair that couldn’t be ignored; After a brief stint in television, she appeared in the group alongside Mel C, Emma Bunton, Victoria Beckham and Mel B, and appeared as a smutty Page 3 girl.
Her time in the girl group constantly made headlines, whether it’s her stunning looks, including a Union Jack mini dress, or her claims of a lesbian fling with bandmate Mel B.
But fast forward 30 years, and those hedonistic days are firmly behind Geri; The star now lives a healthy life in the Oxfordshire countryside with her husband, F1 Red Bull Racing’s businessman Christian Horner.
Turning her hand to cooking, writing children’s books and attending all kinds of royal events, Geri has managed to completely overhaul her image away from her ugly Spice Girl days.
kate hudson

Kate Hudson joined the trend while attending a ceremony in Los Angeles alongside Samuel L. Jackson and John Davis.
The 46-year-old Hollywood actress wore a rumpled olive dress instead of her usually pristine attire.
The satin fabric of Hudson’s dress wrinkled easily when worn, but she looked completely nonchalant as she posed for cameras at the event.
All eyes are on the actor right now, thanks to his BAFTA nomination for his role in Song Sung Blue.
25 years after being nominated in the same category as Almost Famous’ Penny Lane, Kate will now go head-to-head with Jessie Buckley, Rose Byrne, Chase Infiniti, Renate Reins and Emma Stone.
Song Sung Blue sees Kate as the based-on-a-true-story Claire Sardina, who finds love and success alongside her partner Mike (played by Hugh Jackman) in the Neil Diamond tribute band Lightning & Thunder.
Greta Gerwig

Greta Gerwig’s fuchsia dress at the 77th Cannes Film Festival held at the Palais des Festivals in May 2024 served as a perfect example of how stars opt for deliberately wrinkled outfits.
For the event, the 42-year-old American director wore a statement Balenciaga ballgown with ruffles and long, dramatic gloves as a style statement.
Although the dress wasn’t wrinkle-free, Gerwig left a lasting impression on the red carpet.
Gerwig is a distinctive voice in contemporary cinema and has directed blockbusters such as Barbie, Ladybug and Little Women.
