Car thief disappears after four-wheel drive ‘split in half

Police are searching for a man they say was behind the wheel when a car crashed into a tree with enough force to split the vehicle in half.
The man was driving along Point Cook Rd in Seabrook, Victoria, about 1am on Tuesday morning when he was left “completely devastated” after his 2011 Toyota Kluger went through a roundabout, hit a gully and crashed into a tree.
A Victoria Police spokesman said officers had “serious concerns for the welfare of the driver”, believed to be a young man.
“During an extensive search of the vehicle and the immediate surroundings of the accident, we were unable to locate the driver whom police suspected would be injured. The Kluger is believed to have been stolen during a carjacking at Laverton railway station approximately five minutes before the accident,” police said.
“Protective services officers patrolling the area were alerted after a man reported being pulled from his vehicle by a male, who then sped away from the scene.”
Police are asking any witnesses or anyone with dashcam footage to call Crime Stoppers.
