Cargo ship catches fire at Port of Los Angeles, prompting evacuations

A cargo ship caught fire at the Port of Los Angeles in San Pedro on Friday and the crew had to evacuate the ship, according to officials, who called the incident a major emergency.
All 23 crew members were safely evacuated from the ship, according to the Los Angeles Fire Department. No injuries were reported.
The fire was observed on various floors of the ship. The Ministry said that hazardous materials were detected in the relevant bays and hazardous materials teams were monitoring the air quality.

At around 8:00 pm an explosion was reported mid-deck, affecting power onboard, including lights and crane operations.
More than 100 firefighters responded to the scene, according to officials.

“First responders are actively responding to a fire aboard a container ship in the Port of Los Angeles,” Mayor Karen Bass wrote to X. “LAFD continues efforts to extinguish the fire and is monitoring air quality.”
