Mapped: Where temperatures could hit 33C in this week’s heatwave

As the UK gears up for a scorching bank holiday weekend, a yellow heat health alert has been issued, including a warning that deaths are likely to rise.

Temperatures are expected to rise to 33C in some parts of the country on Monday and Tuesday; The UK Health Safety Agency (UKHSA) has issued yellow alerts in London, the South East, the East and the Midlands from 2pm on Friday, as well as the rest of England.

While the warnings mean there could be a “significant” impact on health and social services and an increase in deaths, the warnings will continue until 17:00 on 27 May.

Met Office deputy chief Steve Kocher said: “Temperatures will rise over the weekend, particularly in the south, where 30°C will be recorded on Saturday and 32°C on Sunday. Temperatures are forecast to peak on Monday, where we could see 33°C recorded across the south of England and the Midlands.”

The above-average warm weather means the UK is likely to experience a heatwave, as temperatures are forecast to reach at least 28°C for five consecutive days.

However, the Met Office is predicting some rain, especially in the north of England and Scotland, as hot weather brings moisture.

Forecasters say the weather will become increasingly hot and humid on Friday. Temperatures are expected to reach 28C in Greater London and Cambridgeshire, and around 25C across large parts of England.

People in the south-east of England can expect strong sunshine, while in the north it is expected to be cloudier.

As we approach the bank holiday weekend, much of the country is preparing for sunshine as temperatures remain warm. Forecasters are predicting a top temperature of 29°C in the south-east of England, while the mercury will rise to between 20°C and 25°C in the rest of the UK.

The fine weather is expected to continue on Sunday, with temperatures rising to 31°C in Greater London and 26°C elsewhere in the south-east. High temperatures of 21 to 27 degrees are expected across the rest of the UK, with sunny skies expected for most days.

Bank holiday Monday will bring scorching weather across much of the UK, with the possibility of May temperature records being broken.

Temperatures were previously forecast to start falling on Tuesday, but Monday’s highs of 33C are expected to persist.

Mr Kocher said: “It is likely that May and Spring UK temperature records will be broken over the bank holiday weekend, with forecast temperatures exceeding the current record of 32.8C. “As well as being warm, there will be plenty of dry, sunny weather across much of the UK.

“However, there will be more clouds and showers over Northern Ireland and western Scotland over the weekend. With sea surface temperatures remaining relatively low, light clouds and sea fog are also likely to develop near the west coast.”
