Centre Bans 25 OTT Platforms Over Obscene, Pornographic Content

In a major edition on rude and sexual open content, on Friday, the central government banned the websites and applications of 25 senior (OTT) platforms allegedly hosting obscene, rough and pornographic material.

Among the blocked platforms are popular names such as Ekta Kapoor’s balaji Telek and Ullu, both of which were previously condemned to discussions on adult -themed web series. After the announcement, the shares of Balaji Teleşilms fell sharply to the Bursul.

The Ministry of Information and Publication, the ban, the Ministry of Women and Child Development Ministries, Electronics and CT, Ministry of Legal Affairs and FICCI and CII, such as industrial organs, such as extensive consultations, such as said.

The Ministry said that these platforms violated the following provisions: 67 and 67a of the CT Law, 2000-IPC Chapter 292-Inappropriate Representative of Kadın (forbidden) Law, 1986

A total of 26 websites and 14 mobile applications (Nine in Google Play Store and five in the Apple App Store) have been removed. According to IT rules, intermediaries are directed to completely prevent access compared to 2021.

A senior government official said that content lacks artistic or narrative value and focuses only on “deliberate sexual innuendo and objectivation”. The material is defined as “extremely inconvenient ,, long nudity and sexual obscene content, without a meaningful story or message, which usually contains inappropriate relationships.

The ban follows repeated warnings. In July and August 2024, the Commission on the Protection of National Children’s Rights (NCPCR) marked ULLU and ALTT for open content and called for intervention. In February 2025, the ministry issued an advice that directed the OTT platforms to comply with the ethical rules in accordance with IT rules. In September 2024, all of the 25 platforms were sent to all of the platforms, but violations reportedly continued.

In a relevant development, the Supreme Court issued a notification to the center on April 28, 2025 in response to a petition opened by former information commissioner Uday Mahurkar and seeking a prohibition on a country -wide prohibition on OTT and Social Media platforms.

In particular, Ullu removed the arrest of the controversial show house in May 2025 after the pressure of the ministry, but later lifted it to continue similar content. Authorities said that five banned platforms were blocked in March 2024, but re -emerged under new areas and recorded the arrangements by challenging.

The Digital Publisher Content Complaint Council (DPCGC), a self -regulatory organ chaired by a former Supreme Court judge, had previously hit Altt and Ullu for the depictions of “free” and “strange” sex and nudity. The investigations revealed that more than 100 web series was removed from Ulu and that it was quietly re -reinstated in unprocessed versions.
