Storm Chandra latest: ‘Major incident’ declared over flooding as Met Office issues warning for ice

While some parts of the country continue to be affected by heavy rains, the aftermath of Storm Chandra has been declared a “major incident”.

Somerset Council, which declared an emergency, said there had been “heavy flooding overnight” and that the risk of flooding on the Somerset Levels and Moors “remains high as rainwater passes through the system”.

Storm Chandra also caused disruption to other parts of the South West, the south coast and the north of England, as well as Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland.

Domestic flights were canceled on Tuesday on routes serving Birmingham, East Midlands, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Heathrow, Leeds Bradford, London City, Manchester and Southampton airports.

Yellow weather warnings for ice were issued on Wednesday morning covering England, Wales, Northern Ireland and southern and central Scotland.

A yellow weather warning was also issued for South West England on Thursday and the Met Office said further rain could lead to further flooding and disruption to transport.

Impact of Storm Chandra impacts airports and flights

Storm Chandra continues to ravage the UK and is causing serious disruption to flights.

The hardest hit airport was Belfast City, which is in the middle of the area affected by the Met Office’s high wind warning. At least 27 flights across the Irish Sea to Great Britain have been cancelled: 18 Aer Lingus Regional connections to various British airports, as well as nine British Airways arrivals and departures serving London.

Scottish airline Loganair has canceled 20 flights, including from the following connections:

  • London Heathrow, Manchester and Liverpool to Isle of Man
