Former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro was sentenced to plan a coup to stay in power after losing the 2022 elections, a powerful blow to the populist extreme right movement created by the Supreme Court.
The decision of four of the five justice in the Brazilian Supreme Court is convicted of Bolsonaro for attacking democracy in the first former president in the country’s history.

“This criminal case is a meeting between almost Brazil and its past, the present and its future, Adalet said Justice Carmen Lucia, referring to previous initiatives to overthrow democracy in the history of the country before voting to condemn Bolsonaro to try a coup.

The historical importance of the case goes far beyond the former president and movement.
The four justice also decided to condemn seven allies of Bolsonaro, including five military officers.
The decision points out that for the first time since Brazil became a republic almost 140 years ago, military officials have been punished for trying to overthrow democracy.
Justice is expected to be sentenced to prison in Saturday (Saturday Aest) and how to be presented. Bolsonaro, who is currently under house arrest as part of another case, faces a maximum 40 -year potential sentence.
