Shubman Gill suffers neck injury during Kolkata Test

Bad news has emerged for Team India ahead of the Guwahati Test. Test captain Shubman Gill, who suffered neck spasm during the Kolkata Test, will not play in the second Test against South Africa in the 2-match series. He was removed from the squad. The 26-year-old was taken to hospital after suffering a neck injury while batting in the first test at Eden Gardens. According to The Times of India, Gill rested for a few days and then met with Dr. Dinshaw left for Mumbai where he met Pardiwala.

In Gill’s absence, vice-captain Rishabh Pant will lead the team in the Guwahati Test, which begins on November 22. Talking about replacing Gill as the batsman in the squad, the team management has a lot of options which will make their job a bit more difficult. Some media reports suggest that Sai Sudharsan or Nitish Kumar Reddy may be included in the Playing XI instead of Gill.

Ahead of the much-awaited match, Team India’s batting coach Sitanshu Kotak spoke about Gill’s injury and said: ”…even if he recovers fully, there is a possibility of the spasm reoccurring during the match. This is very important. If there is any doubt, I am sure he will rest for one more match because otherwise it will not be of any use to the team. “A player like Shubman and he’s the captain, so every team misses him.”

For those late to the story, Gill retired after facing just three deliveries in the first Test. India lost the match by 30 runs and the match ended in the second session of Day 3. With this win, the Proteas took a 1-0 lead in the 2-match Test series.
