Cheetah comeback! India’s big cats revival hits milestone
Namibian cheetah Jwala gave birth to five cubs in MP Kuno National Park (KNP) on Monday, taking the country’s total cheetah population to 53, Union Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav announced.

MP CM Mohan Yadav also hailed this as a proud moment for wildlife conservation.
“Good news once again from Kuno National Park… Cheetah Jwala gave birth to 5 cubs, which is an important milestone for China. Cheetah Project” he shared on X.
However, he stated that India’s cheetah population has reached 53, exceeding half a century. This is strong evidence of the success of India’s efforts to reintroduce the cheetah, the CM added.
The cheetah, the world’s fastest land animal, became extinct in India about seventy years ago.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the cheetah translocation project on September 17, 2022, with the release of eight big cats brought from Namibia in KNP.
This ambitious project is part of India’s efforts to revive the cheetah population and improve wildlife conservation and tourism in the region.
