Chemical attack leaves Georgia woman hospitalized with third-degree burns

A Georgia woman is recovering from severe injuries she suffered after she was doused with a corrosive chemical during an evening walk in Savannah, authorities and family members said.

Ashley Wasielewski, 46, was attacked while taking a tour near Forsyth Park on Wednesday around 8:15 p.m. According to Savannah Mayor Van Johnson, an unknown assailant approached him and suddenly poured the substance on him.

“This type of violence has no place in Savannah,” Johnson said in a statement. “Our Police Department is handling this case with the utmost urgency.”

Wasielewski is currently being treated for second- and third-degree burns that cover about half of his body. His son, Westley Wasielewski, told The Associated Press they covered his scalp, face, hands and legs.

“We don’t know who did this,” Westley Wasielewski said. “He has no enemies. He is everyone’s friend.”

Ashley Wasielewski said she was walking around the park after attending the church’s Christmas program when she noticed a shadow approaching from behind.

When he turned around, the person poured liquid over his head, according to his friend Connor Milam, AP reported.

“I immediately said, ‘Why are you pouring water on me?’ he said. Then his skin started burning,” Milam said. “He looked down and his pants were starting to burn his body. He started screaming.”

Police believe attacker was foreigner and are urgently looking for suspect, AP reported.

Detectives are working with the FBI to identify the chemical used in the attack, according to the AP.

“Detectives are actively investigating the cause and circumstances of the attack, and while this attack is extremely disturbing, there is no information at this time that indicates a broader or ongoing threat to the public,” Johnson said.
