Former FBI Supervisor Says ICE Agents’ Missteps Likely Led to Fatal Minnesota Shooting
The fatal shooting of a Minnesota woman by an Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent was likely preventable on at least two fronts, a former FBI supervisor said.
A masked ICE agent fatally shot a 37-year-old on Wednesday Renee Nicole Good. Video of the incident shows agents telling Good, who was in the driver’s seat of an SUV idling in the middle of the road, to “get out of the damn car.” An agent descended into the vehicle and was seen grasping the door handle. After briefly putting the vehicle in reverse, Good appeared to walk away from the agents, when one of the agents fired multiple shots, killing him. The vehicle crashed into a nearby power pole.
In the video, the ICE agent can be seen walking away from the scene without any significant injuries. He was later treated at a nearby hospital and released.
At least three agents are seen in the video near Good’s SUV. The agent trying to open the driver’s side door, a second agent standing approximately six feet behind the first agent, and a third agent approaching the vehicle from the passenger side and walking in front of the vehicle:
hours later 11th Hour In MS NOW, Rob D’AmicoA former FBI chief and former Miami police officer explained how the incident could have been prevented in several ways.
“Obviously, we don’t know much about what led to the shooting, Rob, but in the videos we saw, did you see these officers make any attempt to de-escalate tensions?” homeowner Stephanie Ruhle he asked.
I didn’t do this in the videos we saw. He went from talking to her about stopping the car to immediately putting his hands on the vehicle, and that’s when she started leaving. And I think actually distracted him from that officer’s vehicle to the point where he walked in front of the vehicle.
So I don’t think he probably saw her walking ahead because his attention was right on the police officer at the door.
This reminds me of when one of the first arrests I was out in Miami, I pulled in front of a vehicle and then my superior caught me and I think he was pretty harsh on me. He said, “Look, people don’t block vehicles. Vehicles block vehicles. If that vehicle comes at you, don’t put yourself in a situation where you have to use lethal force because you’re not going to be able to stop it. You’re going to get shot no matter what.”
So, going back to the training, he probably should have gone in the passenger door, which was a much safer alternative if he was trying to help the officer who was trying to get him out of the vehicle. But again I couldn’t see anything. They immediately reached into his vehicle and told him to get out and who knows how they introduced themselves or what they did at that point to get there.
