Psaki tells Democrats to ‘burn’ DNC talking points and speak authentically

MSNBC host Jen Psaki called on Democratic Party members to “burn down” the Democratic National Committee’s (DNC) talking points and speak “like a person with a heart.”
“People need to relax a little bit more, stop talking; it’s funny, as part of my transition from being a former contact person to being on TV, we got the authorities involved, and so when I finish an interview I say, ‘We can’t bring that person up again. They literally like to read a list of talking points.’ There’s a little bit more freedom in how you talk about things, the words you use when you talk about things, and not being so guarded. The one with the heart.” Speak like a human. That’s it,” Psaki told the show’s co-hosts “I Did This” podcast on Tuesday.
Psaki cited former President Barack Obama, with whom she worked, saying the former president called on politicians to say what they think and not always rely on polls or talking points.
“Don’t start with what the polls say. Don’t start with what the talking points you’re given, whether it’s the DNC or whatever, say. First of all, no offense to the DNC – tear down the talking points, you know? Start with your personal opinion. You’re a leader. You’re educated. You’re informed. And just say it. It sounds simple, but a lot of people don’t do that,” Psaki said.

The MSNBC host and former White House press secretary called on Democrats to avoid scripted speeches after President Donald Trump’s victory in 2024 and suggested lawmakers “get real about what you think” during an appearance on The Bulwark’s “The Focus Group” podcast in March.
Psaki criticized the Democratic Party for its failure to reach voters while appearing on comedian Jon Stewart’s “The Weekly Show” podcast in February. He called out the Democrats’ elite language and told them to “remove authoritarianism and oligarchy from every scenario.” Nobody talks this way.
The MSNBC host suggested that Vice President J.D. Vance is “scarier” than Trump and that Usha Vance may feel similarly during her conversation with the “I’ve Had It” host on Tuesday.

“I think the little Manchurian candidate, J.D. Vance, wants to be president more than anything,” Psaki said. “I always wondered what was going through his wife’s mind. Like, are you okay? Please blink four times. We’ll come here. We’ll save you.”
“And he’s willing to do anything to get to that point. And your whole iteration that you just outlined, I mean, he’s scarier in some ways. And he’s young and ambitious and agile in the sense that he’s a chameleon who does whatever he thinks the audience wants to hear from him.”
