Ship attacked near Strait of Hormuz as Iran says it is reviewing US response to 14-point proposal to end war
Foreign Affairs Minister Penny Wong has stressed the need to reopen the Strait of Hormuz but stopped short of committing to Australia joining US President Donald Trump’s “Project Freedom”.
“There are certainly a lot of ships stuck in the Strait of Hormuz and… I mentioned earlier that the strait needs to be opened both for the energy markets and for these ships and sailors to pass through it safely,” Wong told Seven’s. Sunrise.
“We are in contact with the United States, the United Kingdom and France regarding efforts to reopen the strait. We will continue to engage with them. But what we want is for Iran to reach an agreement, to enable them to come to a negotiated outcome that will open the strait and satisfy the United States and the rest of the world.”
“Project Freedom” will help stranded ships leave the Strait of Hormuz and free people, companies and countries who are “victims of circumstances,” Trump said earlier today. He also said US representatives were holding talks with Iran that could lead to a “very positive outcome for everyone.”
